Awesome place to get everything you need and the guy in back is incredible at fixing your guitar.

This review is long overdue--by about four years--but here we go.

In 2015, I took a Fender Stratocaster in for work, which was to be completed by guitar/music repairman Joe. Joe is supposedly a professional instrument worker who works out of a back room in Guitars of Montana. He was to replace the fret markers on my Strat as well as install a new nut.

Let's start with the nut. It was terrible. The string slots were so large that the strings could freely roam around inside each slot, creating a terrible pinging sound and awful tuning stability. I posted photos of this nut on an online guitar forum to ask for other's opinions to ensure I wasn't insane. The people on that forum said it was one of the worst slotting jobs they had ever seen and that I should ask for my money back AND for a new nut installation free of charge.

Next, the fretboard. Oh man. This was a $1,200 American Vintage Reissue '62 Strat. The fret markers were to be removed and replaced with a clay compound (similar to that in original '62s). Well, it turns out the markers were not easy to remove, and some of the fretboard wood came out with them. As if that wasn't bad enough, the clay compound put in its place was rough and uneven. Overall, it looked terrible and my fretboard was shot, effectively devaluing my guitar and reducing its playability.

I asked Joe if he could (a) refund me entirely (I paid in advance!) because of the poor work and damage done to my coveted and expensive instrument, and (b) if he would, at the very least, replace the nut and do a better job on the next one. My requests were met with an angry confrontation, during which Joe said, verbatim, "come back to town and we will settle this like men." I am not kidding. He literally threatened me over the phone. I was in Missoula at the time, so coming back was not possible at that point in time, and after receiving that threat, I opted not to. To put things in perspective, I was a 19-year-old college student at the time, and Joe was a grown man running his business out of the back of Guitars of Montana.

So, I highly recommend to all potential customers: unless you want your expensive instruments destroyed, do NOT take them to Joe at Guitars of Montana. I feel bad for Guitars of Montana because, as I understand it, Joe is simply a contractor who rents out space in the back. However, his services are so bad and his tone so unprofessional that I think it is fair Guitars of Montana suffer the repercussions of hosting such a terrible contractor. Please consider relocating this man so that he does not taint the integrity and quality of your shop more than he has already done. I already know I will never step foot in this store again, even if it means I need to drive to another city for a music-related service.
